Twelve Classics for 2016

Recently, Kristina of Speakeasy and Andy of Journeys in Darkness and Light both posted their lists of twelve classic films that they plan to watch in 2016 for The Blindspot Series.  I did make a list of ten classics that I wanted to watch in 2015 last year and I only managed to watch four.  So naturally I thought making a list of twelve was a great idea and I decided I would join the challenge.  Hopefully I can stick to the one a month plan and complete this list!  When making my picks I tried to find films that are so classic that I was a little ashamed that I hadn’t seen them yet.

Here is my list!

  • Night of the Hunter (1955)
  • The Red Shoes (1948)
  • All About Eve (1950)
  • Seven Samurai (1954)
  • 12 Angry Men (1957)
  • Sunrise (1927)
  • Mr. Hulot’s Holiday (1953)
  • Rashomon (1950)
  • The Public Enemy (1931)
  • Psycho (1960)
  • Gilda (1946)
  • The Lady Eve (1941)

Hopefully you won’t judge me too harshly for not having seen these truly classic classics yet!  I’m excited to get into more movies and try to increase my classic film knowledge in 2016.

Here are some other films that I would like to watch this year…

Why Be Good? (1929)

Rififi (1955)

The Uninvited (1944)

Mrs. Miniver (1942)

High and Low (1963)

Tokyo Story (1953)

The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948)

Bombshell (1933)

All That Heaven Allows (1955)

Criss Cross (1949)

Beauty and the Beast (1946)

The Gold Rush (1925)

The Hidden Fortress (1958)

Yojimbo (1961)

What are you planning to watch in 2016?

Great ones up and down the list. But the sleeper on your list is the Uninvited. Save that for around Halloween. It will give you the hee-bee jeebees in a way that modern gore fails to do.
    Enjoy !

I absolutely do not judge. You have some terrific films ahead of you. Not sure yet what I want to watch yet, but I wanted to credit you (and of course Kristina and Andy) for some good selections. Enjoy your holidays!

I recently watched All About Eve. It was excellent! And I actually have The Gold Rush waiting in my living room. 🙂 Best wishes for 2016. 🙂

Of your list of 12 I’ve seen (and enjoyed) all but Seven Samurai, Mr. Hulot’s Holiday, and Rashomon! Particular favorites would be All About Eve, Gilda, The Lady Eve, The Uninvited, and Night of the Hunter. It will be a great year if you get to all of those!

Some wonderful films on your list, from the 12 I would say The Lady Eve, 12 Angry Men and All About Eve are my favourites, the only one I haven’t seen is The Public Enemy. On your list of other films Yojimbo is a real favourite. Look forward to reading your thoughts on some of these films in 2016. It is fascinating to read the lists people are sharing at the moment and compare with the gaps in our own movie watching experience. Happy Holidays

Wonderful list! I have seen all but Hulot’s Holiday and you will have a blast with these. I think if you commit to one a month it’s doable and fun. Thanks for the mention, may you have a Merry Christmas and a fun movie year ahead!

Great list! I’ve actually seen your entire list of twelve, and I enjoyed all of them to varying degrees. (The Red Shoes is probably my favorite, but a lot of the others are very close.) I’m looking forward to hearing your thoughts on them.

A few of my faves on your list – I know you’re going to love The Lady Eve and Gilda.
Watching ‘one a month’ sounds so easy in theory, but in practice… it’s a different story!

That’s an outstanding list! Sunrise and Gilda are on my list as well. You can’t go wrong with any of those Kurosawa films, but I think High and Low is my favorite. Thanks for the mention, also. Merry Christmas and happy viewing!

Some fab viewing ahead this year! You’ve reminded me that I need to see M. Hulot’s Holiday. Have read so many great things about it, yet have not had the chance to see it.

Speaking of holidays, I hope you’re enjoying a wonderful holiday season! 🙂

Wow, you’ve got some great ones on your list, Liz — I so envy you having them ahead of you! All About Eve, Criss Cross, and Bombshell are three of my all-time favorite movies — I can’t WAIT to read what you think of them. Happy New Year, and thanks for being such a great blogger friend! 🙂

Those are some great movies you have lined up to see this year. Of the dozen my favorite by far is All About Eve but both Night of the Hunter and The Lady Eve are really wonderful films though they couldn’t possibly be different from each other. Happy viewing!

This is a great list! Some of these titles have been on my own “10 Classics to Watch” lists in the last few years. No judging whatsoever! Even when someone has bee a classic film fan for decades you just can’t get to everything, or might be reluctant to try things out of the regular comfort zone — that’s why I started doing lists like this myself a few years ago!

I also like your “extras” list — I have just discovered Kurosawa (thanks to Kristina inviting me to watch HIGH AND LOW with her) and am very excited about seeing more of his films — I caught three last year and hope to see YOJIMBO soon.

    Happy viewing!

    Best wishes,
    Laura

You inspired me to try these lists last year so I hope to do better this year! I haven’t seen any Kurosawa yet and I hope to change that very soon!
