Recently Fritzi over at Movies Silently published a post about growing the brand of your particular blog.  This got me thinking…

Last week sometime, I missed the actual date because WordPress didn’t remind me and I have toddler brain (it’s a thing), I reached one year of blogging.  This is shocking to me because when I started this blog a year ago I had no idea what it would become or the people that I would meet because of it.  I have truly enjoyed every moment of blogging this last year and I want to thank every person who came to read a post, everyone who left a comment, and every blogger who welcomed me into their community.

Back to Fritzi…moving forward I want to try to focus in on what my aim is with this blog.  I started this blog because I have loved classic film for as long as I can remember and I wanted to find a way to share that love. I also knew that when it came to the classic films that I love, I didn’t know half of what I wanted to about their history and the men and women who made them.

So what are we doing here?  I am not a classic film expert by any means. But I am trying to expand my horizons and increase my knowledge every day. That means I watch a lot of movies, read a ton of books, and listen to hours of podcasts all in an effort to learn about and enjoy classic films.

Moving forward I will of course be continuing with posts about films, podcasts, and books.  I will also still be putting up book and DVD hauls as I get them.  I will of course be continuing to participate in blogathons!  One thing that I think will be going by the wayside is the monthly TCM guide.  In its place I am going to try putting up monthly wrap-ups with my thoughts on what I have learned and discovered in the previous thirty days.

I am not a scholar, I am a classic film fan just like you and this is my journey of discovery. Care to join me?

Just a quick post to update you all on what is coming at the blog in the next few months!

First and foremost get ready for October when I will be watching nothing but silent films!  I am really excited to get into this as silent film is an area where I feel like my cinematic education is definitely lacking.  I am interested to see how this goes and it might just end up being something I try to do every few months!

Second, it will come as no surprise at all that I am taking part in some blogathons over the next few months!  Here are the ones that are coming…

THE SWASHATHON hosted by Fritzi of Movies Silently

THE WHAT A CHARACTER! BLOGATHON hosted by Once Upon a Screen, Outspoken & Freckled, and Paula’s Cinema Club

I will cover Robert Barratt

THE CRITERION BLOGATHON hosted by Criterion Blues, Speakeasy, and Silver Screenings

Finally, the fabulous Fritzi of Movies Silently and I are going to be live tweeting another silent serial!  We are starting this Thursday (October 1st) with the first episode of HOUSE OF MYSTERY at 8:30 PM EST so come and join us if you have an inclination!  Judex was a ton of fun and I have a feeling this will be just as good!

Shhhh! A Month of Silent Film…Coming in October

Since starting this blog I have been exposed to so many fabulous classic film bloggers, amazing classic film podcasts, and a whole new world of films that I had never heard of or seen before.  This has sparked in me a desire to improve my film education, which lead to an increase in my film and book collections, and it has also lead me to decide to do a theme month this October.

If there is one area of classic film that I feel like I don’t have enough experience it would be silent films.  Growing up I watched the films of Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin but that was pretty much it.  After starting this blog I found amazing bloggers such as Fritzi of Movies Silently and Olive of Star Nitrate, who have such a passion for silent film that you can’t help but be sucked in.  After taking part in a few of Fritzi’s blogathons and writing about silent films my interest was piqued.  So, I have decided to make October my month of silent film!

As a challenge to myself, I am going to watch nothing in October except silent films.  I will be taking part in the CMBA blogathon so there will be that, I will be writing about THE LADY VANISHES, but otherwise it will be only Marion Davies, Milton Sills, and Pola Negri.  I hope you will join me!

Announcing The William Wellman Blogathon

I recently read the fantastic biography of William Wellman and found myself so inspired by the life and films of this great American director that I decided to do something about it!  More to the point, I decided to host my very first blogathon!

Announcing The William Wellman Blogathon!

Love WINGS?  Does WESTWARD THE WOMEN get your heart beating?  Want to talk about THE OX-BOW INCIDENT?  Think that Gary Cooper owes quite a bit to William Wellman and want to share your thoughts?  Go for it!  You can write about anything and everything related to William Wellman, his life, his films, and his career.

Now for the nitty gritty!  This event will run from September 10-13, 2015.  I am not assigning days for posts so feel free to post any time during the event.  Duplicates are fine so pick any topic you like!  Also, this is my first time hosting a blogathon and I am going solo so please let me know if I have forgotten anything or if you have any questions.  When the event goes live please be sure so send me a link to your posting either through email, twitter, or posting a comment to the event post on this blog.  I want to make sure you get all the credit you deserve!

So now you are itching for the chance to join in the fun!  How do I sign up, you may be asking.  Why it is very simple!  Just leave me a comment below letting me know your topic of choice and a link to your blog.  You can also tweet at me or send me an email (nowvoyaging [AT] gmail [DOT] com) with the same information.  Once you have done that feel free to take one of the fabulous banners, that Fritzi of Movies Silently has so kindly designed for the event, and post it all over the blogosphere or at the very least your corner of it!  I am so excited to host my first blogathon and I hope you will join me!

My Very First Liebster Award!

I am beyond thrilled to report that I have just received my first nomination for a Liebster Award!  This honor was bestowed on me by none other than Ms. Coolsville herself!  If you haven’t already checked out her blog you totally should…and here is the link so you no longer have any excuse not to!

The Rules:
1. Thank the blog who nominated you and link back to them.
2. Nominate up to 11 other bloggers to receive the coveted award.
3. Answer 11 questions from the blogger who nominated you.
4. Tell your readers 11 random facts about yourself.
5. Give the nominees 11 questions to answer on their blog when they post their nomination.

Here are the questions asked by Ms. Coolsville:

1. What advice can you give to a blogger just starting out?

Gosh, I still feel like I am just starting out but here goes!  I would say start making friends with other bloggers because not only are they your best resource but they are also your biggest support!  Also, take part in as many blogathons as you can because not only do they help you get more exposure, they also help you develop and refine your writing.  Finally, watch movies and write about them!  Even if you hated the movie or if no one has ever heard of it before, write a post about it!  It is great practice and also promotes your blog!

2. Imagine eating the perfect meal. What’s on the menu?

Peking Duck with the pancakes and plum sauce, sushi and sashimi, hot and crusty bread with butter, a bowl of my Mom’s potato salad, and brownies with chocolate chips and raisins in them!

3. What’s your favorite album of all time?

Wow…this is tough but I think I would go with ECLIPSE by Imogen Heap.  This is the first adult album I went to hear in concert and I just love all the songs.

4. If you could nominate one book as required reading for high school students, which one would it be?

I think I would pick a book called SOPHIE’S WORLD.  It is a fictional book that actually teaches about philosophy and the history of the philosophers.  At a time when you are trying to figure out who you are and what your world view is, I think it is important to have a basis to draw from and philosophy is such an under-taught subject.

5. What’s your favorite black and white film?

Argh!  This is a tough one.  Growing up I loved THE PHILADELPHIA STORY and I still do.  But as I got older I think my favorite movie has become NOW, VOYAGER.  I saw it at a time when I felt very much like the pre-makeover Bette Davis and it just was the first film that I saw that gave me such a strong emotional reaction.  I had never resonated so closely with a film before and it has always stuck with me.

6. Name three things that bring you joy.

My family, traveling to new places, exploring used bookstores.

7. Coffee, tea, or juice?

Tea, all the way.

8. What is your astrological sign?

9. What’s your favorite element on the periodic table?

10. If you could be fluent in another language, which one would you choose?

Cantonese.  It is my husband’s first language and spoken by his family, including his mom who isn’t totally comfortable with English.  I want to learn it not only for myself but also to teach to our son.

11. If you were given a yacht, what would you name it?

The Vagabond of Destiny

Now here are 11 Random Facts About ME!

1.) I was homeschooled from fifth grade until I went to college

2.) I have moved four times in the last three years, but hopefully this time was the last!

3.) I don’t buy clothes or shoes, I buy books and old movies

4.) I worked as an ICU nurse until last year when my son was born

5.) I started this blog while I was home alone with the baby because I wanted to have something to do when he was napping as well as something to share with him when he is older…

6.) …But it was something I had always thought of doing and I had even started a blog years earlier but it didn’t last

7.) I think that the book of GONE WITH THE WIND is better than the movie

8.) I hate fingernail clippings, even my own

9.) My favorite candy is the Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup

10.) I am a fantasy geek…I played World of Warcraft and read all the books (so far)  in the SONG OF ICE AND FIRE series

11.) I have never eaten at a Taco Bell or a Denny’s

Now it is my turn to nominate some fabulous fellow bloggers!

1.) Movies Silently

2.) Speakeasy

3.) Pre-Code.com

4.) Let’s Misbehave

5.) Silver Screenings

6.) Noir Girl

The Return of the Blog…and a Giveaway!

I am finally back to mostly normal and the house is about 80% unpacked!  To celebrate my survival of this move I have decided to hold a giveaway!  I love classic films and I love books, so why not combine the two?

I will be giving away a copy of A TOUCH OF STARDUST by Kate Alcott to ONE lucky reader!

Here is how to enter!

Leave a comment below and tell me one film that you think I should watch/blog about and why. I will pick one winner at random on April 14th so you have a whole week to enter!  Remember to include your email address because I will be contacting the winner that way.  Good luck and stay tuned for more blog entries coming soon!

Full Disclosure: This giveaway is purely my own design with no help/endorsement/support/advertising from anyone associated with A TOUCH OF STARDUST or Kate Alcott.  The copy is a private copy owned by me.  The shipping and handling will be paid for by me.  This giveaway is strictly from Now Voyaging and no one else!  🙂

A Strange Interlude…But Not for Long!

Things might be a little quiet around the blog for about a week or so because I will be moving house at the end of this week!  Which means that my TV, my DVDs and Blu Rays, and my cable will be in limbo for a few days and so I probably won’t be posting too much until after Easter.  But never fear…I shall return!

I have two posts scheduled to go up on April 2nd for the Pre-Code Blogathon so keep an eye out for those!  I will also be around on Twitter so feel free to check in on me from time to time as I attempt to unpack everything!

Two New Blogathons and a Thank You!

I will be taking part in two more blogathons in April and May, but before we get to that I want to say Thank You!  I recently was admitted into the Classic Movie Blog Association (CMBA) and I am completely thrilled!  New members are admitted on the votes of current members so a great big THANK YOU to all current members!  It is a terrific association and many great blogs are members so be sure to check them out!

Now on to the blogathons!  I will be taking part in the CMBA’s Spring Blogathon themed the Fabulous Films of the 30s!  I have decided to do a post on THE AWFUL TRUTH and there are many other fantastic posts planned so be sure to keep an eye out for that!

This May 16th is National Classic Movie Day and what better way to celebrate than with a blogathon?  This time it is a blogathon devoted to celebrating our favorite classic films hosted by  Classic Film and TV Cafe.  I will be writing about my favorite movie of all time, THE PHILADELPHIA STORY!

Stayed tuned for all the fun and enjoy!
